...For excitement Petrouchka is difficult to follow, but guest soloist Paul Lyddon aided by the orchestra rose to the occasion. Lyddon chose to play the Rachmaninoff Concerto for Piano in D minor, the third.
This extremely difficult piano part was flawlessly performed. Especially noteworthy is Lyddon's musicianship and control. He was master of the situation at all times. His piano technique is exceptional and he showed great flexibility and evenness of tones, especially in the scale passages. He very effectively carried out the long melodic phrases and extensive passages leading to the several thrilling climaxes. He plays with great strength and power.
Lyddon, a graduate of the Eastman School and the University of Illinois, is on the faculty of the University of Wyoming. He recently returned from a concert tour with the Denver Symphony.
It is evident that Lyddon will be increasingly in demand as a soloist, and we are fortunate to have an artist of his stature appear in concert here...
