Paul Lyddon, Kaoru Tajima to perform at Punaluu piano recital

The Ka'u Concert Society will present duo pianists Paul Lyddon and his wife, Kaoru Tajima, in concert at the Seamountain Aspen Center at Punaluu Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Lyddon was born in Rochester, New York, home of the famed Eastman School of Music. He showed early signs of musical talent and was enrolled in the school's preparatory department at the age of 3, the youngest student ever admitted.

He earned a diploma from the preparatory department in 1948, and a bachelor of music with distinction degree in 1954. Graduate study was done at Eastman, The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and at the University of Iowa. His many teachers included Soulima Stravinsky, son of composer Igor Stravinsky, and the eminent Austrian pianist, Alfred Brendel.

During the years 1956-59 Lyddon served with the United States Army Band in Washington where he frequently performed at the White House for President and Mrs. Eisenhower.

Since 1959 he has combined a teaching career with a concert career. He taught at four American universities before becoming a member of the faculty at the University of Hawaii in 1976. His tours as a recitalist, soloist with orchestra, member of chamber music ensembles and professional accompanist have taken him to all parts of the United States, Europe and Asia. In recent years he has appeared with the Honolulu Symphony four times.

Pianist Tajima was born in Omiya, Saitama, Japan. She began her study of the piano at the age of 5 and is a graduate of Toho Gakuen, Japan's most prestigious school of music. Since that time she has taught piano, played recitals and appeared in various chamber music ensembles.
