Sabbatical Leave Report — Spring Semester 1983

Paul Lyddon

February 6, 1984

I left Honolulu on February 7, 1983 on a four-month trip to the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong and the Peoples' Republic of China. During this time I performed thirteen public concerts, taught private and class piano lessons, lectured, met musicians, attended concerts and rehearsals and did considerable sight-seeing. While I gave seven concerts in China, there would have been many more but for the political repercussions following the defection in March 1983 of the Chinese tennis player Hun Na. Following is a summary of some of my activities:

C. Cultural Events and Sightseeing

In each place that I visited I attended as many concerts and other cultural events as was possible. These included all kinds of western music (solo recitals, orchestra concerts, chamber music and opera) and ethnic music (especially in China).

D. In Conclusion

I was able to accomplish a great deal on my sabbatical for which I am extremely grateful to the University of Hawaii. It should be of interest that while I was able to arrange, on my own, the time I spent in the Philippines, Japan, and Hong Kong, I was invited to, and was a guest of, China. This is a great honor not accorded many.
