When the Rochester Civic Orchestra gives its next performance in its high school series of concerts at East High auditorium Tuesday afternoon, Paul W. Lyddon Jr., 16, will be the featured soloist.
Lyddon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lyddon of Huntington Hills, will play the allegro movement of Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F.
Through this series, annually continuing for 25 weeks, the Civic Orchestra, Guy Fraser Harrison, conductor, has been making a contribution toward music apprecia- tion which has been recognized throughout the country as one of great significance.
The concerts are given through cooperation of the Civic Music Association and the public school music department of the Board of Education, of which Alfred Spouse is director.
Other cities have enjoyed similar series, with the exception that the Rochester concerts are free to the children, and are spread through the school season, whereas in some other cities young people's concerts are presented every day for possibly a week or so. School pupils are prepared by previous study of a music notebook prepared by Howard N. Hinga, assistant director of music, Rochester public schools, and during the school year pupils are given examinations on what they have heard.
Later this month, at the annual Spring concert, young Lyddon is scheduled to appear as solist with the East High Orchestra, Charles Starke, director, playing Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
Lyddon has appeared as featured soloist at The Barn, Gannett Youth Center, and in Edwards' Emerald Room. Both last year and this year he was piano soloist on the Hi-News program broadcast by Station WHEC.
A pupil at the Eastman School of Music since he was 3, Paul will be graduated in June from the Eastman preparatory department, where he is a pupil of Marjorie Truelove MacKown. Paul is president of the Junior Class at East High, is, Paetor Urbanus of the Roman State and a member of the tennis team.
